GMP Biorefinery Engineering Project Advances Thailand’s Biotechnology Ambitions

Thailand is accelerating its transformation into a regional biotechnology hub with the development of a GMP Biorefinery Pilot Plant at the Eastern Economic Corridor of Innovation (EECi). Led by the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), this project supports the national Thailand 4.0 strategy, aimed at driving innovation and high-value industries.

As part of the BIOPOLIS complex, the facility is designed to function as a flexible, non-proprietary platform for biotech scale-up and validation. It enables collaboration among private enterprises, public organizations, and universities—both domestic and international—to bring laboratory innovations closer to industrial application.

A FLEXIBLE PLATFORM FOR PROCESS OPTIMIZATION

The GMP biorefinery pilot plant adopts a modular “Lego-style” configuration, allowing users to:

  • Reconfigure process setups based on specific production needs
  • Adjust parameters to identify optimal operating conditions
  • Scale processes efficiently from laboratory to industrial level

This flexible design helps reduce risk, improve efficiency, and accelerate time-to-market for biotechnology solutions.

SUPPORTING THAILAND’S BIOECONOMY GROWTH

The EECi initiative plays a crucial role in advancing Thailand’s industrial ecosystem by linking research, innovation, and real-world manufacturing applications. Biorefinery and sustainable agriculture are among the key focus sectors, supported by strong government investment in infrastructure and technology development.

Established in 1991, NSTDA leads Thailand’s efforts in science, technology, and innovation, collaborating with global partners across academia, research institutions, and industry to enhance national competitiveness.

ADVANCED ENGINEERING EXPERTISE BEHIND THE PROJECT

The engineering scope for the GMP biorefinery is led by Glatt Ingenieurtechnik GmbH, a German-based company specializing in process and plant engineering. The project includes conceptual and basic design phases, ensuring a robust and scalable foundation for the facility.

Glatt brings advanced capabilities in:

  • Bioprocess and chemical engineering
  • Particle design and powder processing technologies

These technologies support production across industries such as pharmaceuticals, food, chemicals, and biotechnology, including both sterile and non-sterile applications. With extensive experience across Asia—including Thailand, Vietnam, China, and India—Glatt ensures high standards of GMP compliance, flexibility, and operational efficiency.
